Luderitz, Namibia

The country of Namibia is very interesting. It is an arid desert, 90% Christian, that was colonized by the Germans. As our South African lecturer on board ship put it, “The Germans came late to the party and got the leftovers that England, France and Holland had rejected.”

Luderitz’s charm is in the early 1900s German architecture. We arrived on Sunday and the town was virtually a ghost town. The three banks on Main Street told us that there had to be some industry here; and it turns out it is diamond mining. The highlight is the Lutheran church that has incredible stain glass windows from Kaiser Wilhelm. The crews were putting up the Christmas decorations on the deserted streets.
